This is a piece made for the AIM 2017 competition, inspired by this artwork:

The story listed in the description is of a crashed pilots' last moments being made better by a beautiful flower. This song aims to capture that feeling of acceptance and tranquility, while evoking an alien and sci-fi atmosphere.

This is what I would imagine hearing while the pilot was exploring an uncharted planet, rather than peacefully waiting to die on it. With exception to that, I enjoy it. Great job.

I'm in love with the tranquil acceptance and weirdness of this piece. It feels as though the weird flower in the piece is speaking (metaphorically) to us, the soldier, while our life support beeps at us. While I think this may be in the wrong genre -- although our categories are woefully insufficient -- I'm very much enjoying the vibe.

Only complaint, an outro would have been better than a single note at the end with that pad. Very nice atmosphere.

Kalviter responds:

Thank you, I'm very glad you enjoyed it! I will admit I struggle heavily with categories on NG, but hopefully I can figure it out. The outro could have been extended a little bit, but I did want the finality of one note to show the soldier finally passing.

Amazing sounds! I love the vibe. I personally think it fits the picture excellently. It makes the soldier look so much cooler and gives him personality. It reminds me of watching Tunami as a kid. Awesome work!

Kalviter responds:

Thanks very much for the feedback, I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as you did! I can only hope the judges for the competition are as favourable ;)

This does a good job creating the atmosphere of the planet. A bit of the unknown and unsettling, and I can see it working great as a sci-fi game level. Very ambient

But where it falls I'm afraid is that it may not tell the story of the picture so much. It doesn't do much about what the pilot may be thinking or feeling among the planet. It doesn't give the sense of despair that the pilot may be thinking, or the acceptance of inevitable death. It might hurt your score, it might not. I'll leave that up to RealFaction.

By itself it isn't a bad ambient piece. The mixing is decent and brings along a cool feeling with it.

Kalviter responds:

Thanks for the feedback! I do tend towards pretty ambient production so I'm not surprised this is how it ended up, I'm glad it gets across the planet atmosphere well. It's a shame about the pilot's story not coming through as well as I'd like, though I'll admit I'm not too sure on how to do that better. Any tips you have would be appreciated!

This is a good track, however the drums could sound a bit cleaner, such as taking the flanger/chorus off the snare or turning it down a bit and having more variety in the open hats. Another thing is maybe having the song structure be more dynamic and also making the sine-sounding pad more stereophonic. Hope this helps!

Kalviter responds:

Thank you! I was worried about the snare, thought it might be a bit much, I'll try your fix and see if I like it. The structure's intentional, if only because I felt like a dying pilot experiencing tranquility should be given the proper ambiance and slowness. Whether it has artistic merit is another matter lol. Again, thanks so much for the feedback!
