The average number of required thumbnails from 2003 to 2011 is roughly 1200-1600/year
in 2012-14 it jumped to roughly 500/month because of icons getting shrunk
Then it piddles out to nearly nothing in 2015 and onward

Have you tried that on mobile? Ruffle added some support for things like that, assuming that feature was merged in to the current version.

How exactly do you come across these items and how do you know that they need to be ruffled
Or maybe what does ruffle offer that some of the traditional players don't have

The goal is for all the Flash content to run via Ruffle but since it's not all supported yet, we have a desktop player as a fallback. Olskoo is basically finding Flash that works in Ruffle but hasn't been switched over yet, so he notes it's ready to have Ruffle enabled (and has been updating thumbnails along the way).
When you come across Flash on the site that isn't running in-browser, you can add this to the end of the URL to test it with Ruffle:
/format/flash?emulate=flash

We did auto-enable Ruffle for all the pre-2006 Flash content at one point and we'll eventually auto-enable it for everything once enough AS3 content runs. Letting people set a default on their end could ultimately be a nice option.
With the addition of that blue checkmark, we can officially cross off the year 2000 as:
- All submissions have a thumbnail
- No submission has a micro thumbnail
I always say that baby steps are how we achieve things and this is the culmination of all of those little baby steps
