He give a sigh, and say.
"Sir, I don't have a watch either.."
"Sorry.." He adds and step closer to face the cashier.
"You know, my day was pretty rough.." I start saying.
"Is it..?" He says, looking slightly at me with that broken nose under some bandage.
"Yeah, I'm a cop.. A detective to be exact.." I explain.
"Really.." He says.
2 seconds passed, but it felt like precious hours that needed to be add for him to think..
"You know, there is a restaurant across the street.. Want to have a bite and talk?" I ask him.
"I have no money.." He replied.
That reply was the one of man who had nothing lose.. I knew it.
But I wasn't going to let him go into that road.
"Well, let me pay it for you."
He stop at these words, and turn around to say.
"Ahh.. Sure."
His face was sad, but when we both head out of the gas station and go to the restaurant.
Things went to a different mood.. A way different set of atmosphere to be clear with that.
We sit down in the old restaurant that was still open at this hour, around midnight..
In christmas eve..
The only guy that was working here come to greet us.
He look at the young man, feeling puzzled by the sight of his nose..
"Yeah, I had a fight." non-chalantly said the poor guy.
"Mmh.. So what do you both take?" Says the waiter.
Me and the kid think for 3 seconds..
Then he just says out of the blue. "I will take a big cheese burger with fries.. Please."
"A cup of joe.." I said calmly.
"Alright, wait here men." Says the waiter and he walk away to turn into a cook behind the
kitchen.
"Nice place, is this where you come often at night?" Says the kid while looking at the empty restaurant
to left to right.
"Yeah, we could say that."
The kid look at me and frown his eyes.
"Oh, I forgot to tell you my name.. I'm Jim." He say with an awkward smile.
He tend his hand and I handshake it.
"John.." I said and look at him with an analyzing eye.
He try to keep himself composed, but I am too serious for him and he says.
"Excuse me, I need to go to the bathroom.."
"No you don't.." I tell him all calm.
He stop himself from standing up and look at me with sad look in his eyes.
"W-What.." He slip out of his mouth.
"You need to tell me what is wrong in your life, Jim."
"Hum.. Wrong..?" He whimper trying to reply but can't.
He tilt his head, his nervousity and emotions making him turn into
what he is..
"Tell me your life. I want to hear it now.." I continue.
And then, he closes his eyes.. Trying to formulat his thoughs and he explain it to me.
"I was a man who had a dream.. A life.." He says and open his eyes.
I simply nod and listen.
"My adoptive family never really seemed to care much about it, but I wanted to have the perfect
life.. You know.. Having a wife.. Having a job.. A nine to five.. Money to have for both of us.."
He look down for a second and then ask.
"You have a smoke?"
I hands him a cigarette and a lighter.
After his first puff, he seem more interested and focused to continue.
"I had what I wanted.. You know.." He start crying while explaining the rest.
I nod, the cook take his time to make our food and Jim keep going.
"But then.. It all felt apart.. Even if I kept telling myself that my life was just work and that I was
heading somewhere.. Right.. I lost everything that made me happy after all."
He take another puff.
"My wife left me after 2 years going like this.. Then.. A year later.. Four men attacked me in the street..
And then I got evicted.. I was now homeless.. Huff.. I'm still is actually."
"I have nothing.." He adds.
He glance at me but look down after that.
"I dunno what went wrong with me.."
"It's not you, the world is hard.." I tell him.
"Pfff.. Yeah right?" He says with a pity smirk.
"How about you work for me?" I ask to him.
Jim look at me and seem shocked of that question.
"You want a 29 years old loser to work for you?" He says.
I nod and then says. "Damn right, I even think of letting you sleep on my couch for a couple of days."
"Tss.. Like if that was truth.." He smirk and puff his cigarette.
"It is." I say and Jim look at me a bit confused.
"Don't give me hope.."
"Why not.. Jim?" I say and deliver a kind smile.
"Ah.. Alright.. As if it gonna change anything in my life at this point.." Jim says and time flies..
He eat his burger and fries.. I drink my coffee and we head home shortly after.
From now on, Jim was my assistant.
