2023 Highlight - Pixel Art

I’m a big fan of pixel art and would love to see a lot more of it on NG, so if you’ve ever been tempted to share your pixel art here, I hope this post encourages you!

There was lots of great pixel art on NG this year and we’ll be covering a bunch in this post. Remember, you can click on art to open it in our full screen viewer, at which point you can use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in and explore those pixels!

@omegachainoboy has found the sweet spot with these game choices, resulting in some of my favorite art of 2023.

@SovanJedi remade an old piece, resulting in the totally wild METROID PRIME versus JIGGLYPUFF. He also shared some Resident Evil 2 demakes. It’s always a good year when SJ shows up!

@donpeppi makes playful pixel art that’s always a joy to behold.

@hbystuff crafted a number of mesmerizing scenes, I really look forward to each new piece.

@PixelHeadAche made all sorts of amazing pieces this year, with themes ranging from Blasphemous and Castle Crashers to Moushley; remember that one?

@Vixit delivered us to different worlds with some standout art this year!

@itzah shared a gorgeous Ocarina of Time wallpaper and a dreamy Rosalina.

@Daydreamer94 made a series of animated pixel globes and an isometric Terraria world. Each is a lot of fun to explore!

@moawling made our Pixel Day promo banner and site skin this year, along with some other memorable pieces!

@mich-spich shared a lot of pretty pieces this year!

@x0triple0 created an assortment of cool character art and won third place in the Halloween Spooktacular!

@gatekid3 participated in the Picayune Dreams and Paper Planet art contests, experienced a month of ducks, made Mettaton dance and shared a pixel art comic.

@Reluu imagined pixel art fighting game variants of several Overwatch characters and rendered SF6 Ryu in SF3 style.

@ScepterDPinoy created massive pixel collages for Pixel Day, Pico Day, Robot Day and the Halloween Spooktacular, along with a demake of Alien Hominid HD!

@VoidDdraig made some killer Monster Hunter, Lethal Company and Jurassic Park pixel art!

@aleha84 renders all sorts of real-life scenes as animated pixel art, with a great emphasis on mood and lighting.

@Rappenem built some beautiful architecture, swung into Swordtember and overall made lots of great art in the fantasy game genre. 

@Miroko made us want to play NG racers, created creepy game cover art and came up with a series of indie game playing cards!

@CheetoDeeto generated all sorts of groovy game-themed works!

@Jhano showcased exciting cyberpunk art and animation from Neo Junk City.

@Luis made lots of fun pixel animations with characters from around the site. I’ll highlight all the skateboard ones!

@maruki treated us to breakfast, mushrooms and bees!

@DreamSpectre shared a colorful piece for Pixel Day and followed it with a series of Metroid reimagined!

@Pix-Xeline presented Impending Doom for Pixel Day, shared a limited palette piece and a smokin view.

@marceles transported us to a variety of charming locales!

@IrregularSaturn creates lots of cool Mega Man mashups but also shared a stunning League of Legends piece.

@PixelHao made lots of imaginative sci-fi art.

@Shyraku created retro game covers, celebrating the PC-98 era

@Astrawitch drew a variety of dragons, as well as gaming and Mob Psycho fan art!

@Kldpxl visualized some eye-catching industrial and downtown scenes.

@VulpsVulps made a sentimental Amphibia sendoff and other calming scenic pieces.

@Scissors7 has some great vehicle and robot art!

@tr0ylol created several beautiful classic gaming pieces.

@helpcomputer0 works within the ZX Spectrum limitations to create wonderful fantasy works.

@Space-ageWrangler’s abstract pixel art is unique and inspiring!

@Ditchu came up with all sorts of silly crossover ideas!

@Razpaz animated a ridiculous crossover between Pop Team Epic and Warhammer 40k!

@SuperPhil64 did some demakes, animated traveling animals and got spooky for Halloween.

@gejospixelart made lots of Game Boy / GBA demakes and their isometric works were a hit!

@YuriKadry shared some game concept art, as well as some fun crossovers and Katana Zero fan art!

@Destri threw a costume party and created Coromon emojis!

@MichaFrario made a dancing Miku!

@SockDotClip isn’t generally known for pixel art but this left an impression!

@Iviqrr shared some great character portraits!

@Izzi8bit had new takes on classic characters, along with their own OC!

@Karlestonchew made a mini city for Pixel Day, shared Bomb Rush Cyberfunk fan art and organized the Cubes Mini Collab, a colorful collection of cubes, like the name implies!

The NG Hex Collab organized by @MechanicalMantis brought a huge variety of pixel artists together to create one epic canvas!

The 1-bit Artapalooza presented numerous tiles of minimalist pixel art, while the spooky edition went bigger and added a splash of color!

Apologies to everyone who didn’t make the list, there was A LOT of great pixel art this year! It’s one of my favorite categories here on NG so I hope we see lots more in 2024.

Also that is a HUGE amount of featured pixel art, I'll definitely come back to this thread when I'm looking for cool desktop wallpapers!

Followed some new pixel artists that I wasn’t familiar with. It’s a common misconception that pixel art looks the same without the luxury of pressure sensitivity and a stiff grid like structure but all that variety above says otherwise.

i do wish animated gifs animated on rollover or by default. Or maybe a toggle that you could turn all animated gif thumbs on or off. I like the chaos of Times Square with everything moving. I picture homepage like that

When Is The Calendar Page Getting Updated To Mobile Friendly?

Ideally it will happen next year but there's a lot of stuff that needs getting done before we even get to the next batch of new stuff.

That's one hell of a shout out! I'm impressed to see pixel artist on Newgrounds that can make interesting stuff in the art portal. Newgrounds wouldn't be a magical place if it weren't for the pixel artist here but fortunately Newgrounds is already a better place to have talented pixel artist and artist of all skill levels here.

I wish to do more pixels.

Is this the last one?

I'm not sure yet, been prepping a post for Christmas Day but I have to decide if I'm also posting today / tomorrow or leaving it with pixel art for a bit.

As much as I have been hoping to shift my focus away from pixel art in my own personal work for a little while, I may do a thing or two related to it here and there.

I wouldn't be making art had I not started with it years ago.
