Great Animation, Undermind By Some Flaws

I'm going to be quite harsh about this, but given that this flash is currently the Best Thing On Newgrounds I hope that's not a problem.

Firstly, the music was beautiful, but it was spoilt by the low quality of the recording. It was just a bit of noise, but that was enough to spoil the music for me. The sound effects seemed a bit muted as well - I'm still not quite sure whether they were intentional or not.

Right, onto the plot. In the few moments during which you depicted the sprites, you gave them life and character superior to many other much longer projects. The excellent animation (those "countless hours" definitely paid off) really helped here. They were adorable. And they didn't need a reason to be - they just were, and that was fine.

Then it all went to hell. A random castle appears and squashes the water sprite. Fine, apart from the word "random". There was no reason for the castle rising up and crushing the heroine other than "Feel emotion, viewers! Sob! Sob now!" It felt like a cynical attempt to activate my tear ducts, a massive non-sequitur designed to squeeze emotion out of the audience with minimal effort, and for that reason I felt nothing for the event.

If this were my pet project (and if I could animate to save my life) I'd have had the sprites frolicking about a bit more, and the castle (or some sort of "metal sprite" that creates the castle) looking on in jealousy. Adorable though they were, more development of the sprites would make the loss of one such more painful (as it is, Sparker sacrifices himself over the removal of someone he's known for less than a minute!), and it gives motivation for the crushing as well.

Finally, the ending was completely removed from everything else. I think I know what message you were trying to convey (something about coming together to create humanity?), but the "realistic human" art style seemed to be from a completely different project from the sprites. Maybe have them making some "super-sprite" instead, or just end with Sparker fading into nothingness as well, his work done.

It's a cruel score I'm giving this, I know. You were under time pressures, and it's clear that this is a real project from the heart. But some technical issues with the sound, as well as cutting the story of the sprites short, dragged this down from greatness. Given the right resources, though, this crew ought to make a big splash (no pun intended) on the Newgrounds scene in the future! I'll be looking forward to any sequels.

I don't get it.

Very well presented for a flash animation, but no story with any poignancy - so Man was created from the rubble of a fire demon and a giant building? What happened to the girl, or what was the significance of her death other than that it caused the fire demon to attack the unexplained building? If this were in any other form than film with pretty effects you'd notice no actual story at all...
Plus, they probably weren't compatable anyway judging by that little burst of steam, so what did she even mean for him in the first place?
Gah this film frustrates me, I'm sorry. I'm sure you know what you wanted to portray but for me it did not come across.

I'm sure you've heard this before...

The animation and art are amazing! However, that's all that's amazing. There's minimal story and really no reason for Sparker to even avenge Aquanna's death seeing as they only just met for 4 seconds. Story is half the work there, mate. You can find a flash with crappy animation but if it has a great story, you can't help but stay and watch.

Well animated but...

the period between introducing the female love interest and killing her to give the male protagonist a reason to fight is the shortest I have ever seen (this trope may be referred to as fridging and is quite common in comics and films).
Good looking short but it doesn't give us quite enough time to attach ourselves to the characters before the action removes both of them. They move well and look good but the story needed a more dynamic introduction or a longer one. The action was very well done but it comes out of left field, as if you had wanted an action scene rather than the story or material lending itself well to/needing one.
Lovely music, well chosen.
