Good, but....
The penguins need better AI. They should find the closet turtle, and chase it. If there comes a time where another turtle is much more closer than the turtle they're chasing, they should abandon that turtle, and chase the closer one.
Also, when it comes to obstacles, the penguins are absurdly stupid. I know that they need to work as obstacles, but it heavily reflects upon the penguins' stupidity.
My recommendations:
- Add hot keys for the skills
- Display what stats your current skills have (you can only see the better ones)
- Be able to launch your penguins at different times
- Add an influence feature, where you can click and drag an arrow or some other notifier, and the penguin will follow the steps that your mouse took. This way, penguins still get stuck on occasion, but you can manually free them up.
- Add a Turtlepedia (Encyclopedia) that shows you the different stats and special abilities of the different turtles
- Invest into more music. The current theme is great, but it's just a theme. You should have differing themes for the title, level selection, shop, and a small random selection for the fighting, or each area gets its own theme.
- Add an Appetite (or another similar name) stat, that increases the amount of health penguins receive when they kill a turtle
There's still plenty of room for expansion, so I'm expecting a sequel from you. Other than the few bothersome attributes of the game, I really enjoyed it. This game is unique. Finding a unique game gets harder and harder these days.
I Don't Feel Like I'm Doing Anything
I play a fair share of upgrade games, so I know the score, but I really felt like the interactivity in this game was lacking. I'm pretty much just here as an observer who lazily swipes his mouse around the screen in an effort to collect money. Yeah there were the power-ups too, but they seemed kind of useless. I either didn't utilize them or I'd use them to no effect.
Basically the game is just one long grind for money. The only skill level required is having enough money to buy enough upgrades to beat the next level. And while that's a common theme with many upgrade games, the lack of anything else to do in this game makes it really boring.
I liked the graphics, even the concept, it's just I wasn't having any fun playing this because I wasn't really playing it. And while the "Kingdom Hearts" music was nice to listen to, it didn't really fit here. It kept reminding me about how much more fun I'd be having if I was playing "Kingdom Hearts." Plus KH is a series that is high on the action, so the music fits well to that theme. Here I'm just casually watching penguins do their thing, so the music doesn't really fit the theme. It's too high octane for a game that boils down to watching and waiting.
Okay
Fun idea, but not executed perfectly. Thought there were only 2 mistakes, they were huge. First, penguins frequently get stuck behind walls for large amounts of time. Second, for some reason, penguins almost always go for a turtle on the other side of the map instead of the one right next to them. These fixes could make this a great game.
