Reviews for "Frantic Frigates"

A few little flaws

Overall, the game was quite fun and well done. There were, however, a few flaws.

First, the movement was floaty and a little loose. An unfortuante effect was overcorrection on my part, which would sometimes result in my mouse leaving the box a tad. When this happens, the ship automatically moves toward the upper right corner. It would have been nice if the game paused when you moved your mouse too far, as a few games on Newgrounds do.

In addition, after getting max speed, the ship seemed to bug out. I would move in a direction and my ship would stay in place, then zoom across the screen. In addition, the last boss had a little lag. This issue only increased after defeating him, making a longterm continuation impossible.

Great idea, very fun, needs a little work here and there.

Real fun!

Takes good maneuvering and strategy.
I found the best upgrade config was...
+4 Loot and Magnet
+4 Speed
Level 4 flag
Level 3 flag
and +4 Weapon
in that order.
All medals. 3565 starting gold. Max level Sea Lord :)

Fun Trip

Well, that was a fun trip, Captain.

I enjoyed the simple bullet hell style gameplay. It was fun, and addictive, especially when the "hell" portion of this genre came along.

I appreciated the graphics very much. They were smooth, simple, and not much of a detriment to reliable old chuggers like mine. My only gripe is that I was too busy dodging bullets to pay attention to the ships.

Nice sound and music. The Pirate theme was simple, addictive, and not that much of a detriment to gameplay.

The upgrade system was fine. Fair, and a little unfair because getting max is impossible before final boss, but the prices are right, and the progression requires a little smarts.

The game was fun before I managed to reach Endless mode. I guess the boss battles and the frustration of losing was what made me obsessively retry.

A lot of playthroughs isn't called a challenge, it just means you have to take longer to finish the game. Even someone with relatively low skill could eventually win by accumulating enough starting money. A real challenge is when you don't get any bonuses at the beginning of the game for having played before, and you must play through the entire game to win. That game would be made hard, but not unbeatable. Multiple playthroughs would only happen because the game is hard, not because the game requires them to win. So instead of grinding for money, you'd be grinding for actual skill. Two games that take an approach like this are Nethack and Touhou, and both are great games.

That said, this isn't a bad game, you just can't call it "challenging".
