Reviews for "Castle Guard 2"

TheGames8, pumping out the same game with a 'new addition' every week! Seriously. All you do is continually bring out the same games. The only real difference in them is the number at the end of the title. These 'sequels' are pretty much updates for the previous games. At this rate, why don't you just skip to the part where you add DLC and bad Micro-Transactions to the games? EA of the flash games, in my opinion.

Tower Defense, one of the big overused game themes.

On one hand, the idea of clearing stages by counter-rushing enemies is rather interesting and quite fun. But there are four big flaws with the game.

One is that as they are passive games, Tower Defense games rely on massive upgrading trees and a high difficulty level to grip the attention span of players. Each level is meant to be a complicated puzzle. And well, although the game does get interesting, it never become really intense.

The other, also linked to the statement above, is that the game is lacking, upgrade-wise, and even seem bugged (cannons, for example, can be upgraded endlessly). The game also lack the ability to undo/sell upgrades when on the field, which is rather frustrating.

The other two are less forgivable. One is that the game is very prone to lagging and very prone to bugging up, objects not showing up. I understand that an unit limit is necessary to keep lag down but if the game cannot spawn more units, the game still eat up your in-game currency, which is blatant fake difficulty.

However, the supreme flaw is that the game is not balanced. At all. All you need to beat the game are wizards and knights. Building any other kind of unit is not only innefficient but suicidal once the enemy make wizards of their own. Simply put? Even unupgraded, wizards are insanely overpowered ; they have an insane amount of life, destroy every unit quickly, they're ranged, and they only cost twice the amount of money of the others (which is a pittance considering a single wizard group can solo an entire army of other units). Mix them with knights to distract enemy wizards and you have the lone viable strategy for the entire game.

Yay.

The concept of a game where you counter-rush your enemy is quite interesting but well, I think that the flaws above should be fixed at the very least.

If you plan on making a sequel, a few suggestions...

-have enemies have towers of their own in later stages.

-make it possible to have your fort(s) target more than just a single fort.

-have forts that are reduced to 0 stop spawning troops.

-have tower upgrades be more strategic ; have upgrades have do more than just increase damage and range as to make towers other than the Ice Tower viable.

The archers are ridiculously overpowered.

Okay game with a fairly simple concept, however it quickly degrades its own balance with the upgrade system that is put into place. Units that are not upgraded become worthless as even the unit they hard counter can destroy them, and for all the damage I think I'm doing to enemy units with towers or arrow barrages, It's impossible to tell what is doing anything as the levels progress.

The one thing I did come to find is that wizards are vastly overpowered, as their range and speed makes them simply better catapults, and the only unit that seems to "counter" them is the worst unit in the game; the sword. Even then the sword units were continuously getting beaten by enemy wizards to the point where I could do nothing if the enemy just decided to swarm wizards on me.

This premise could work, but it's a game that depends on a strong balance and rock-paper-scissors mechanic. It should be focused on that aspect first, and should severely downplay the boost given with the upgrades for all units.(With that being said, I honestly don't think any of the numbers listed for damage and life are accurate on the upgrade screen, as after only 1 upgrade wizards have 300 health while the horse upgraded twice has only 45? Doesn't seem right.)

Finally, the game could really just use a bit better elaboration on the various elements of the gameplay. What do the different towers do? What is the "Guard" upgrade for? Maybe a simple health bar over units so we can see damage tracked and make better decisions.

Not sure if its a bug or not but the adds keep poping up mid game. If its a bug fix it otherwise never put them in a game as it ruins it. Otherwise this is an ok game, but not very exciting.
