One thing I don't get is why trying to run away with the car doesn't work at all. Aside from that lovely job.

reminds me of the first dont escape game... something I would ask is why not take the car and drive away. a full can of gas (5 gallons) would last a car on average about 100-150 miles. if knowledgeable to some degree of local terrain I'm fairly certain I can find a better holdout than that location. (A map would likely be laying around somewhere too. aka in the gas station) presuming that hoard was going 2-3 mile an hour (totaling at best 25 away from you at start one would guess they could buy themselves easily four more days to find and scavenge better materials/shelter. even half an hour distance of drive ability to scavenge would be a possibility as well with large reward to low time cost.
but enough about the hypothetical... what does the coin do? I not found a use for it yet?
