That was pretty funny, I liked it.

Indie bands playing at professional clubs in a nutshell

Damn, I think from a technical perspective this might be your best animation yet. I was really surprised at the little things in this, like Gooseman leaning against the door frame or bending over slightly to the side. The facial expressions and particularly eyebrows were impressive. Those small movements were vastly improved over your previous work, and that's saying a lot because it's not like there was a problem with them before. I had to go back and look at some of your older animations to be sure of what the difference in this one was, and I was surprised at the difference in quality between Quest of the Manwhore and this animation. You did fairly well with the cloth of Fernando's...boxers? Shorts? Whatever they are, they looked a bit more like actual clothes rather than a part of Fernando in most of the opening shot. The lip flaps/lip syncing was improved somewhat in this as well, and the audio quality seemed "better" somehow. I'm not really sure how else to put that. Gooseman sounded different in a way. Clearer, more crisp, almost like you recorded with a better mic or in a soundbooth or something. I also loved the lighting effect you used in this. It gave everything a very neon-washed tone, and I really want to see more of that. Have you ever considered a detective story-type animation (aside from Opium Cop?) That effect would be great for giving a Blade Runner/Neon-Noir feel to it.

There was a little bit of weirdness with the final shot of Fernando and Gooseman walking away into the night. It looked a bit like they were more hovering away than walking, but I really had to look closely for that. Honestly I'm just nitpicking so I feel like less of a kiss-ass. There wasn't much that could've been done better from a technical standpoint.

In terms of writing I'd say this was among your better. The timing on most of the jokes was just right, the jokes themselves were just off the wall enough to be hilariously jarring without it feeling completely random. The whole opening scene of Fernando masturbating to the Golden Girls and Gooseman's reaction simply being "Nice!" is the perfect level of bizarre, as was the "reminds me of my childhood" joke. I think those are the best kinds of "weirdness as humor" jokes: the ones that are still believable in a strange way rather than the ones that just come out of nowhere. The guy who introduced them at the club looked strangely similar to Tony Abbott to me. This just might be the best of your one-off Manwhore videos yet.

And I can't resist asking, did Gooseman have different colored glasses in this, and is there any significance to this? Will we be seeing a new wardrobe on him in the future?

Sexual-Lobster responds:

Thanks for the thoughtful review, glad you liked it!

Recolouring Gooseman's glasses was part of me rethinking the colour palette. He would still have the yellow strip if he was in the direct sunlight but in this late afternoon and then evening scenario it wasn't bright enough.

Someone else said it looked like Tony Abbott, I can see it too, but it wasn't intentional. I just tried to draw a really fugly guy!

Re: targeted randomness, I agree, and in projects such as this one I strive for that sweet spot. In other projects I aim to go further astray and of course I don't always pull it off.

Re: that walk cycle, some people are saying i used CG! It was on 4s initially and the weight looked a bit better, but it seemed to jar the eye, so I inbetweened so its on 2s and it ended up looking a lot smoother but slightly floaty.

This was the funniest thing you've done in a while. Not that I don't love your recent stuff, but this was face-hurting funny. Somehow Gooseman and Fernando getting along and hanging out always makes for the best comedy.

glad you liked it!

Ha, this was pretty good! I thought these characters got a little stale in the middle of the manwhore industries series but this was classic.

I think gooseman needs to commit more wanton murders like he used to. It was more intriguing when I wasn't sure if I was supposed to like the guy or not. Just don't ever change pleasure island to where gooseman never punched the guy's face and exploded his head. Don't make me wear a "gooseman punched first" shirt.

Sexual-Lobster responds:

yeh he hasn't cut loose for a while. i guess ive never thought about whether i want people to like him.
