Reviews for "DFL! Episode 5: Meat Loaf"

No no no no no!

It's NOT "octopi." Check out any cephalopod website! Anyone who studies them knows that to be a very common linguistic error. People think "octopus" is a Latin word, and that it should have "i" replace "us" to make it a plural, like "succubus"/"succubi." That's WRONG! It's not a Latin word composed of "octo" for "eight", "us" to make it an object, and "p" to fit the compound word together better. In fact it isn't Latin at all, it's GREEK! It's "octo" for "eight," (same in Greek as Latin, there aren't different Greek and Latin number words for eight, like "uno"/"mono" for one or "quadra"/"tetra" for four-- it's all just "octo".) and "pus" meaning FOOT, as in "Oedipus Rex," "King with the Swollen Foot". "Eight-foot," get it?

So although that "us" in "octopus" sounds like it should be a Latin word ending "-us," it is in fact the latter two-thirds of the Greek "pus." If we want to use the pluralization from the original language that we English-speakers borrowed this word from, the way we do with "succubus"/"succubi" from Latin and "seraph"/"seraphim" from Hebrew, we have to call the darn things "octopodes!" That sounds ridiculous, so people who study octopuses call them just that. Sounds wrong, because it's just a normal word, as opposed to the more sophisticated-sounding "octopi," but in fact "octopi" is wrong and "octopuses" is right.
But whatever you want to call these strange, short-lived and fecund snails with big brains and hands but no shells, Tako and DFL are cool and I hope you stay in the portal's upper echelon for a long time to come! Ever consider having Tako do a bit on Spanish Paella? Great stuff!
