Reviews for "Samurai Adventure"

I kind of like it?
I'm kind of not sure why it's called an RPG though, it's not like you actually get to choose much about your character during the game - it's much closer to an action-adventure game like Zelda. Mind you, as a Zelda-like, it doesn't look particularly bad. It's a bit on the simple side, but sometimes simple is all you need.
Only gripe I'd have is that navigation in the world is a bit hard since all areas are vast and use the same tileset, so they start blending together after a while, but I guess it adds to the challenge, and fits with the retro style, since older exploration-driven games like Zelda or Metroid didn't have built-in maps - though perhaps having smaller, more memorable rooms that use different colors or different tilesets or have unique names could help - something like Jet Set Willy or VVVVVV used to do.

SirenGames responds:

Thanks! I'll clarify in the description for future players, but this game was made in 24 hours by me and me alone (except for the music tracks). I was restricted to using 3 colors, yellow, red and white with a black background.

Also it's an RPG because you level up and increase stats as you play, which brings it out of a Zelda-like and into the realm of RPG I thought.

If I had more time I would definitely have added new tilesets and content, but 24 hours isn't a lot of time to make a game from scratch, so this is all I could cram in.

Really good for a 24h project and considering the restrictions.
Rated only 4 because of the music because, while I think it's a good 8bit background music, it doesn't match the game (or the man is a space samuraï, idk).

SirenGames responds:

Ha ha! Fair enough. Thanks for the feedback! To be honest I'm not much of a musician, so it'd probably take me 24 hours to make a single track that sounded even remotely close to appropriate. So I took to the web to find some free music.

Very well made 24 project. I do like the detail you put into the game even with the limited time you had. The game play itself was smooth and fun, and reminded me a bit like the original Legend Of Zelda. I do have 2 complaints. For one, I felt that the yellow environment was not the best choice, as the color began to hurt my eyes after a small while of playing. Also, the hit detection is a bit off. The bee/fly enemy was able to damage me even when he wasn't touching my player. Finally, the sound and music was great in the game. Overall I rate this 4/5. A great pick up and play RPG that pushed its limits as it was completed in 24 hours. Just a few tweaks like maybe adjusting the yellow to a softer yellow or a darker color to mix better with the black, and fix the hit detection, and this would be a perfect 24 hour RPG.

SirenGames responds:

If I have a couple hours tonight I'll look into getting some better hitboxes. That issue has come up before it was released as well by a friend. Also I totally agree on the color as well. Maybe I'll look into a muted overlay or even changing the assets altogether to fix that.

Thanks for the awesome feedback!

Good retro game. I wish there was music.

SirenGames responds:

There was music last time I checked... And I just checked right now. There's definitely music.

Really enjoyed the style and the adventure game, had some problems with the number of enemies and how to fight them without taking damage, but that last part may be just because I suck. In any case it brought memories of what may have been with the atari and if you would like to see the video review ,here it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFuU0j0J3_0

SirenGames responds:

I really appreciate you doing a video review! That means a lot to me! The game is meant to be somewhat difficult, but it's definitely doable. Collecting all of the shurikens helps at the boss fight too. If you rush the snakes you can kill them before they have time to jump. Everything else is just about attacking while moving away from the enemies. It takes a little practice.
