Reviews for "Donaji & the Magical Poncho"

if the poncho can assume human form then why bother giving it to the girl? realistically everyone should be dead except her. the Wind god would just kill everyone unless she becomes his property. The weapon the poncho used to scare away the totally not aku from samurai jack was already lost in the beginning of the animation unless any weapon touched by the poncho has the ability to morph. im also a huge critic of deus ex machinas made only for the mc. the wing god ate everyone but conviently makes her a tree that the anti cold poncho has the ability to return back to human form. it isn't that it doesn't have potential it just relies on people to care more about the art and animation then the easily torn apart plot.

Shi-Gu responds:

I agree there's many flaws in the plot, indeed, the story is pretty old and when translating it into animation, I focused more in the animation itself rather than the plot.
However, I think there are some misunderstandings here.
The wind god had not killed everyone, he's ruthless, but also the kind of wicked god who does play with his victims instead of going directly for the kill, I believe that's easy enough to see in the way his character was treated (also, I wouldn't say Aku was at all an inspiration for him. This god is another manifestation of Tezcatlipoca, an aztec god of the night who controls smoke, so I wanted him to be ethereal like smoke as well. Resemblance to Aku is just a coincidence, as I watched Samurai Jack only a few times as a kid).
The weapon of the dead warrior at the begining is the standard "aztec sword", a "macahuitl", so the Poncho God having it is just like anyone owning a regular sword in a medieval setting. The "lost" weapon at the begining and the one he has are not related at all.

Gods transforming people into trees, then killing others, then giving fortune to some others. That's normal in mesoamerican myths as there was no concept of "good" or "evil" and I wanted that apparent irrationality present in this little story. The Wind God is moved by his own personal desires and his attraction to the protagonist makes him want to keep her as a tree rather than eating her.

Once again I do agree this explanation may not compensate for a plot that could have been more consisten, but I do believe it needs context in order to be judged correctly.
Still, I appreciate the criticism and I will try and fix all these issues in the webcomic that will follow this story in the future.
Thanks.

PERFECT ANIMATION! I see you're going for wind waker style. Don't hide it lol. But i love it. Similar to my art style which is like Wind Wakerish as well. I'm motivated now. Keep it up I love it.

Shi-Gu responds:

Thanks!
Hahaha, yeah, Windwaker has been an inspiration, but mostly for color and atmospheres.

Fantastico!
What a treat!, this is very creative and wonderfully animated.
The character design and art are fantastic, I'm loving the modernized traditional look.
While my spanish is limited I can still tell the voice acting is pretty good and the music is wonderful.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, those are some nice Zelda homages.
A few things that stood out to me were the fluid movements of the black wind with the electricity adding to the effect, really scary and the video game sound effects which added a modern feel and furthered the zelda feel to me.
If I could offer criticism (difficult) I'd say that there were a bit too many stills, particularly during the first victims death though this may be intentional to add a story book theme.
One of the best things I've seen in my decade here on newgrounds, amazing stuff.

Shi-Gu responds:

Thankyou very much!
Yeah, Zelda was a pretty big inspiration for me, mostly the Windwaker!
About the stills, that must be because it originally was created as an interactive animated book, all for a contest which I didn't win. Since then I decided to make it into a fully animated film but I still ended recycling most of the original book's material, so there's some contrast with the still images and some more complex sequences I did afterwards for this animation.
One of the best things you've seen in the decade?
That's incredibly flattering!
Thankyou!

Noooooo, maestro, esto es hermoso, el arte es fantastico, que decir de la animación, me gusto el doblaje, en fin, solo puedo decirte que continúes con tu trabajo y y esperare ansiosa mente lo que traigas a continuacion!

Shi-Gu responds:

Muchas gracias!

This is why I newgrounds. Holy that was fantastic.

Shi-Gu responds:

I guess this is also why I still newgrounds.
Thankyou!
