Reviews for "Rogue Fable II"

Great game, but there are issues.

Of course a rogue-like is supposed to be challenging, and you've done a great job of doing that. But the challenge should come from the gameplay, not bad mechanics and balance issues. I develop table-top gaming systems, so I have a few suggests for how to make your great game an amazing game.

Better balance. I'm not the first to comment and probably won't be the last, but the rogue and warrior classes are basically useless compared to the mages with their unlimited ranged attacks. Perhaps give them a crafting skill tied to the Ranged ability. Spend energy to craft darts for the rogue and javelins for the warrior. Rogue could make like five arrows and warrior makes maybe two or three javelins. Since we're spending energy all the time, I think that's a fair trade off to give the non-mages more access to ranged attacks.

Food. No matter how powerful we get our characters, once the food runs out the game is essentially over. Since there's no reliable way to obtain more food and the merchant doesn't restock his wares, there should be some way to obtain food. Maybe a "Hunting" skill that you can activate like the Sneaking skill, and while it's active it greatly increases the chances of monsters dropping meat.

There needs to be a sell option with the merchant. I like how when you pick up more than one of the same item, it gives that item a +1, but ultimately you pretty much stick with one or two weapons. Yes, they all have different uses, but we should have the choice of whether or not we want to make use of those options. Plenty of times I just wish I had been able to buy more meat but instead I'm carrying enough boots, gloves, and spears to stock the clearance rack at at Renaissance Faire. Also, the merchant should sell keys.

Rings. The weapons stack and improve on each other when you pick up multiple of the same type, so how come rings don't do that? It would be perfectly fine to NOT make the rings stack if we could equip more than one on each hand. Last I checked, I have five fingers on each hand and I could fit a ring on all of them if I really wanted to.

Those are my ideas. I really enjoyed your game but ultimately it became more frustrating than challenging due to the various issues I mentioned above. If you are able to address those issues and make improvements, I'd gladly come back and waste an entire weekend wearing out my left mouse button.

Game is really great, albeit difficult also. I would love a possibility to gain some permanent skills or bonuses to characters, that would carry over ascensions.
Also, my save game got broken — game crashed while going downstairs into dungeon (meaning, the new dungeon didn't load, just screen turned dark) that I've already had visited. And after restarting and trying to continue playing, the screen just turns blank and the game doesn't load.

The memories of stone soup dungeon crawl are real.
Absolutely excellent but like the rest the rouge is underpowered whereas the best class by far is the necromancer simply because you can
1. life spike for initial damage
2. Immediately mp cannabalize for the mp used
3. Regain the difference in hp lost through the life spike
4. Rinse and repeat Ad nauseam (and if that doesn't kill then add the poison buff through your staff)
I won the game fairly easily with Necro with this strat. On another note if there too many enemies you could poison cloud and eat mushrooms for the difference.

The gods could have been better implemented (more god powers that were similarly useful like the wizard Altair.
Shops need to have a sell option and offer a lot more end game items (then again I had bad luck throughout)
And a lot more secrets would be nice.

I finally won. Is kind of hard, but well done. The two times I reached the farthest, I was playing warrior. I guess it was the mixture the most basic warrior attributes, melee and fortitude, mixed with the talents, using charge in combination with power strike, that saved me a lot of trouble. And its true that sometimes, due to the randomizer, youre kind of short in items. But if you manage to advance, and by saying that, I mean to understand the fact that sometimes there are fights you wont win, youll eventually reach a new stage with the required items.
I must admit that, the telepathy helmet, which marks the enemies on the map, was a lot of help in both times, but that isnt everything, using the rouge theres a talent that let you have the same option, but I still got killed. I think there might be some other talent you may add to the rouge to make it a stronger character.
The toughest stage for me, was the arcane tower. Man, I had more trouble in there than in the subsequent stages. Those ranged enemies were difficult to beat. The player needs to be careful to ALWAYS have something to throw.
I noticed that, maybe by the randomizer, there were a lot of closed rooms, and throughout the run I only found one key. It's cool that, it really gives you the feel of an unkown place, where you wont be able to access everywhere you want, but sometimes, watching the items on the side, while being unable to get em made me sad. It would be nice that the rouge could lockpick those doors.
I also tried the mages a little bit, I wish they were stronger, just a little, it would make the difference. Or to have another way to train the talents, rather than by finding a book, which, is still interesting in itself, because you will always be forced to create a new strategy depending on your run, but sometimes it is too tough for the mages. I was getting so amused with the necromancer combo of life pike and cannibalism, but I needed to make more damage. Maybe I'll be able to figure out another strategy for him.
Well, I guess I wrote a lot, but I really liked your game. Nothing really new, but a well mixture of nice things. I like the desing, very simple but catchy. You may also want to add a little story at the end, it would be very rewarding. I took me around three hours to beat it, lel.
The only thing I can really complain is a glitch, where out of nowhere in the middle of a battle, the game just froze. It was on the ninth level I think.
Thank you for the game!

This is difficult and challenging, requires some planning of tactics. I like it but it'd be nice if I could actually get to the end =/ But then we'd complain it was too easy lol
