Reviews for "Rogue Fable II"

Good game so far. Don't have much to say here because I haven't played much and I am mostly posting to report my first crash. Was in a room (previously) full of mushrooms and opened a door with warning labels on it. Killed a few enemies from the room and the game semi-froze when the following events happened in a single turn: I was attacked by a Clockwork Archer (under the influence of a resistance potion), selected my darts, and another Clockwork Archer stepped onto a fire shroom. I say semi-froze because the music still played, I could select my different weapons, inspect tiles, enemies, and items, and look at the character sheet, but I couldn't move or attack anything. I took a screenshot of what it looks like a little after the crash: http://i.imgur.com/gE1TePJ.png

I can provide more details in a PM if necessary, if I remember any by then.

Thanks for the review and bug report. This seems to be a problem a few people are having. Every fire effect in the game seems to cause it for the people I've spoken to so far. I implemented a possible fix. Possible because this never ever happens for me. Let me know please if its worked for you. Its been melting my brain a bit because the fix worked for some people and didn't work for others. For a bug that I already can't see you can imagine my frustration lol. But yeah PM me about your experience. I'd like to get this fixed for everyone.

Awesome but for the love of God pls alter the function of right-click.

When I select fireball and then I decide not to cast it I instinctively right click to lose the spell (because other games works like that) but instead...her the spell goes off, often in my face :)

JustinWang123 responds:

Today I learned that it actually IS possible to overload the default browser right-click. I remember a year or so ago when I searched this topic it was just page after page of people saying to never do this. But now it just returns a lot of explanations of how to do it. So maybe things have changed. I'll look into it, having a whole other mouse button opens up an enormous range of possibilities.

This game is addictive as heck. I will say that the difficulty is a bit hard; I saw elsewhere that you said you feel it is correct, but I think that in the early dungeons it can be a bit too tough sometimes. If my goal was simply get to the stairs, I could do that, but I like to clear the entire level, which may be something I need to consider not doing I guess? I mean, I get that rouge-likes are meant to be replayed, but I also enjoy beating the game, or at least progressing quite a bit before having to restart. As an example, if I stumble onto a patch of water on Floor 1 and meet a Storm Enemy, I'm essentially effed, regardless of how much HP I have, it just kills you so quickly. Since no buffs are saved after dying, I don't feel like I progress much. Having some sort of persistent upgrades would be nice. (hell, even having a persistent mute option would be nice :P )

I don't quite understand the Food mechanic; It also seems that Killing enemies doesn't give XP, but picking up Gold does. I feel like killing enemies should definitely be giving XP.

Overall I really do enjoy this game and think with a couple minor tweaks it could be awesome. I'll keep playing, but hope to see updates coming down the line!

JustinWang123 responds:

Thanks for the review! Updates are definitely coming. The difficulty can certainly still use some minor tweaking. I say its pretty close to correct because hundreds of people have won already with every class (kongregate allows stat tracking so I can stalk peoples success rate lol).

I don't want to just keep making the game easier in response to players wishes otherwise eventually it loses all challenge and that's sort of the point of roguelikes. Persistent upgrades are also something I'm unlikely to ever implement for this same reason of maintaining the challenge level. I want a victory to be meaningful, to be an achievement only the most skilled and dedicate players achieve.

Persistent mute button though, that's something that's sorely lacking. I know I always have to fumble to turn it off every time I start the game.

Both killing enemies and picking up items grant experience.

Thanks again for the review. Please feel free to PM me with any further thoughts or comments.

Good graphics, easy controls. It took a while to figure out what the gold and certain items were for, but when I found it, it was really fun and addicting.
There's just one little glitch. I got to level 8 and every time I try going to level 9, it freezes on me.

JustinWang123 responds:

Thanks for the review! I believe the level freezes have been fixed now in the latest update. PM me if your still experiencing them. Thanks for playing!

awesome game!!! its like the original imposible rogue game, but actually playable, im still trying to make it further than floor 3, i just have one problem, sometimes randomly, the game freezes, its not a BIG problem and it only happen sometimes but the only way to repair this bug is to reload the page, but that will erase your current run, if you solve this problem and add more classes and general content, you should launch this game on steam greenlight to get money of this masterpiece, if that happen, i would DEFINITELY aprove and buy it, keep on the work!

JustinWang123 responds:

Thanks for the review :).

By randomly freeze do you mean A) when descending or ascending stairs. B) when some kind of fire or explosion occurs or C) none of the above. There's a few crashes that I'm trying to figure out that I can't seem to replicate on my system so any information you can supply is extremely helpful.

I'd like to do a few more iterations on this game before considering steam. So maybe by Rogue Fable IV it will be ready for the big time. Thanks for your support!
