Depends what it NEEDS doing to it. If it's actually a perfectly working vehicle, then start where you want, but if there's other parts that actually require working on or replacing for the car to function, then get those done first, then concentrate on pimping it out.

'Better' is quite a broad term ;P

I'm no engines expert, but there's a large variety of ways to improve your engine: increasing the cylinder size / adding more cylinders, add an extra exhaust, add an intercooler or a fuel injection, etc etc etc.

Take a look at this to get a general idea of some of the things you can do. If you find one you're interested in, do a bit of research with Google and see what that comes up with, then let us know how you get on. :)

Forgot to mention, a few of my friends used engine induction kits on their first cars, but unless you get a good one and have a decent engine to begin with, I don't really think it does much. One of my friends had a 1200cc VW Polo, and the induction kit only really made it rev louder and did very little for the performance, which we all laughed at. ;P

They're relatively simple to install though and I suppose it's probably quite a good starting point if you want to get into engine modification.

Does anybody know of a list that shows which countries require car insurance by law? I just found out that New Zealand doesn't even require a driver to have insurance of any type ( they do have a fund which pays 3rd party for anybody in a crash if they wernt the ones at fault)

the reason i ask is because i want to take pat in either the Budapest -Bamako in 2010 or the Plymouth Dakar in 2009, I want to know which countries REQUIRE me to have insurance.

The US and I think Canada require it, but that's as much as I know, Sorry.

Australia, the UK and Ireland also require it I think, but other than that I'm not too sure.

Leap, maybe you should talk to your insurance broker, maybe they can tell you, or offer you international cover.

Hey guys, I'm back after a lengthy absence. Looks like things are quiet at the moment.

To the guy who asked about car insurance, I'm not too sure how the insurance would work in your situation, so I suppose as MGSTroll said you should contact someone who works for an insurance company.

Response to The Car Enthusiasts Club 2008-08-24 17:17:31

Whoops, not been here for a page or two. Have I missed anything? For the guy asking about insurance, as much as I'd like to help you out I don't have a clue about how certain foreign systems work...

Anyone seen the "new" Veyron that Bugatti are releasing? It's only £1.1 million...

Hello fellow NG car enthusiasts. I´ve been a big car freak since i was little. My father´s been a mechanic all his life and even built himself a Lamborghini Countach kit car. Working in the garage, he used to have to test drive cars he fixed, and sometimes brought them home at night to take back in the morning, so sometimes he´d take us to school in porsche´s or other cool cars :P

Right now i have a pretty dodgy car, a VW golf Mk II, but i´m looking to save up to by a new Honda Civic (European Version), preferably Type R, but they´re quite expensive, so maybe just a 1.8 VTEC.

He built a Lambo kit car? That's pretty impressive.

Yeah, the new Honda Civic's are a hell of a lot better than the old ones in my view. Mostly in the visual department, but it's an improvement overall.

So, do you fancy joining the club?

Life-Stream + this club = win

I have nothing to drive right now as I haven't renewed my insurance in lieu of going to university. I don't really need a car in London, especially as I get a free student rail card from my bank as a little freebie that comes with my student account.

Still, I already miss driving, and it's only been about a month since my insurance expired :/

Yeah. He never got round to finishing it though, the lazy bastard. It´s nearly done though, it needs the interior, a few things outside, and probably a new spray, but it´s 90% done. Pic below.

I´ve always liked the civics, even though they´re just regular road cars, i just like them. And this new model is über sexy. Some people don´t like it, but i think it´s beautiful. My cousin has the type R of the model before this one, and it goes like a dream, so this one must be nice too. Also, i think this new civic has one of the most impressive interiors i´ve seen!
Tell me this isn´t beautiful.

Sure thing!

Well, atleast you don´t have to worry about London traffic, or congestion charges or anything like that.
What part of London you in?

Man, since i´ve started driving i think the longest i´ve been without a drive is about a week, and i was eager to get back in the car. I do love a good drive, and i drive more than an hour a day.

Indeed.. I'm going to be in Western London (namely Uxbridge) as of September. It's good that it's not right in the centre of London, as places like Oxford Circus make me feel physically exhausted with the sheer concentration of people in one place.

Also, if I did REALLY want a car in my 2nd or 3rd year, I could probably get away with it, which I definitely couldn't if I was in Central London.

I've always enjoyed driving, too. Ever since my 17th birthday when I first got behind the wheel and couldn't figure out the clutch for the life of me. ;P

When I was still at school I'd give my friends lifts home just so I could drive a little longer. Of course, if I was ever going to temporarily stop driving, now is probably the best time, what with the fuel tax increasing exponentially.

I still haven't seen even one of their brand new episodes this season. I've been meaning to get around to it, but things got in the way. Any good ones that I missed?

Loads of em, the last series was a very good one. My favourite one in this series is still the first episode, the one where they try to make their own police cars. I laughed my ass off over that episode.

BTW, Top Gear is on BBC2 tonight at 7 o'clock if you can catch it. You can be sure that I will ;)

My mate had a 93' r32 nissan skyline, it had only a rb20e in it but he had plans, although it had r32 kit on the fron and sportswear kits on side on back it was pretty standed, was planning to get rb25det neo2 in it, new mags and that. it was low, too long in fact the police pink stickered it, it was good for drifting, but well his mate crashed it, 160km/h into a couple of frm posts and then 500m of hedge luckily only the back got destroyed not the front so they wern't harmed. I leave you with a nice picture.

oh nearly forgot, can i join your club please :)

I think he put an old volvo engine in it, but it´s a big one, atleast a 3 litre. He said he put 2 turbos in it years ago and tried it, but he said it was too fast and too dangerous so he took them out (aww), but even without them it´ll be quick, because it´s quite a light car.

The new Civic looks insane and is a great car (triangle exhausts ftw),BUT and this is a big BUT, it ain't as quick or as nimble round the corners as the old one.

Yeah, but you know how much they exaggerate on Top Gear. I don´t care if it´s slower or not as nimble as the other, it looks great IMO.

I can't give you a straight answer to be honest, because I'm having trouble finding info on the 2.0 V6 model.

However, what I will say is that the 1.8 turbo is a great model, and the turbocharger will guarantee that it is quite a speedy car. To be honest, there wouldn't be a huge difference in speed anyway.

My advice: go with what you like. Forget speed, both will have it in abundance. Think about fuel economy, price, insurance, tax, comfort, reliability (all the boring details lol). At the end of the day, there's no point having a rocket of a car that is expensive to run, is as comfortable as a Turkish prison and breaks down every 10 minutes.

Ok, maybe that was exaggerated, but my point stands. Compare them in terms of other features, and the choice should make itself.
